Small steps set great pioneers in motion

Susanna Roman, a preschool teacher in Lidköping municipality, out for a walk with the children in Filsbäck.

'We have become better at allowing children to challenge their own risk assessments. If they want to climb things, for example, we are present and show that we believe they can do it. It's amazing to see how they grow from it!

'We have stopped saying no to all the fun.

These are a few quotes from the preschool network in Lidköping municipality. Make a Move, in collaboration with the municipality, invites to several occasions per semester where knowledge enhancement and exchange of experience are at the center. Over 40 educators gather each time from different preschools and between the meetings they are encouraged to share good examples - gold grains from their everyday lives.

The picture is just from a shared good example from Filsbäck preschool. 'The older children walked to the site and to keep them all together they held a rope they call the 'snake'. Out of habit, we took out the stroller for the smaller children, but after a while they had to walk too. Fittingly, they each got to hold a 'snake' when the seat belt was hanging outside. It went so well!'

'It's the small changes in everyday life that make the big difference for children. We need to challenge the overprotective attitude that generally prevails in the adult world and allow children to be as safe as necessary, instead of as safe as possible. The sum of all the little gems can become a whole treasure of positive movements for both educators and children,' says project manager Julia Hildorzon.
