Make a Move is aimed at municipalities that want to increase movement among their residents in a long-term and sustainable way. The initiative is based on physical literacy as an approach, cross-sectoral collaboration and promotion of movement in several different arenas.

Make a Move is led by RF-SISU Västra Götaland and is run with financial support from Region Västra Götaland.

Collaboration

Regional collaboration - Local collaboration - Cross-sectoral collaboration within municipalities

Collaboration is one of the pillars of Make a Move. Through cross-sectoral collaboration at both regional and local level, conditions are created for increased consensus, modified working methods and new initiatives with physical literacy in focus.

Regional cooperation

To promote collaboration at regional level, Make a move has created the Movement Council in Västra Götaland. This enables strategic collaboration between the municipality, region, business, academia and civil society. The Movement Council currently includes 9 different organizations and is coordinated by RF-SISU Västra Götaland.

The purpose of the Movement Council is to:
- Contribute to moving movement higher up the agenda
- Exchange ideas and experiences across organizational and sectoral boundaries
- Develop and synchronize different actors' activities/efforts
- Help each other to apply Physical literacy in different arenas
- Enable research and use academic expertise for evaluation and impact measurement

Local cooperation

Make a move also paves the way for cross-sectoral collaboration at local level. For municipalities working with Make a move as a model, it is recommended to establish a local movement council. This includes representation from the municipality, activities under the auspices of the region (e.g. BVC, BUMM, youth clinic), Fritidsbanken, local businesses, local associations/civil society actors, RF-SISU Västra Götaland and representatives from the target group (young people, older people, guardians), etc.

The purpose of the local movement council is to identify the needs and wishes of different target groups, facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences, and enable joint efforts to promote movement.

Cross-sectoral collaboration within the municipality

The third dimension of collaboration is collaboration within the municipality's various activities. In order to succeed in promoting physical activity in the municipality, collaboration between administrations/sectors is key. The methods and tools used by Make a Move therefore pay particular attention to enabling and improving cross-sectoral collaboration within the municipality.

Multiple venues

No single organization can achieve a society that encourages movement and participation on its own: work needs to be done across sectors and at all levels of society. Make a Move aims to get more actors to recognize the importance of physical literacy and contribute to a movement-rich society in a wide variety of arenas. This is in line with the final report, SOU 2023:29, from the Committee for the Promotion of Physical Activity.
