Sedentary behavior and insufficient physical activity are estimated to have cost society SEK 16.5 billion in 2023, for the four disease groups cancer, cardiovascular disease, psychiatric conditions and type 2 diabetes. The results are presented in the Public Health Agency of Sweden's publication "Socio-economic costs linked to sedentary behavior and insufficient physical activity".
The Public Health Agency of Sweden's calculations of the costs to society of illnesses linked to sedentary behavior and insufficient physical activity mainly concern four major disease groups: cancer, cardiovascular disease, psychiatric conditions and type 2 diabetes. Overall, the analyses indicate that the costs of sedentary behavior and inadequate physical activity in the population are high and could be reduced by 25% if one tenth of the population increased their physical activity from the lowest level to the recommended level and reduced sedentary behavior.
