Schools

The most important arena for promoting physical activity among children and young people is school. This is where we reach all children, including those who are least active. The primary school curriculum states that pupils should be helped to develop all-round movement skills and good body awareness. They should be offered physical activity throughout the school day, for example, through pulse-enhancing elements in teaching, outdoor education and break activities.

There is much to do here. Based on an understanding of movement, schools can stimulate movement. For example, through the thoughtful design of indoor and outdoor environments or safe and secure routes to school so that children can walk or cycle to and from school. Providing physical activity-based recess has a number of positive effects, such as increasing community cohesion and reducing bullying.
