Skateboarding school - a new way for adults to meet and create community

Lidköping skateboarding association launches skateboarding school for adults, aiming to boost health and combat loneliness.

- We want to create a safe and fun environment where you challenge yourself and at the same time get social stimulation, says the initiator Fredrik Bergsbo, 52, who has long experience of skateboarding and studies public health at the University of Gothenburg, to NLT.

- We want to create the conditions for good health throughout life and if you find an enjoyable activity, we believe that you will also continue with it throughout life, says Fredrik.

The first skateboarding session at the Sockerbruket skating rink was a success, with an introduction that focused on the social aspect. The group, made up of both men and women, was welcomed with coffee and a roll, where they had the opportunity to share their stories about why they wanted to learn or resume skateboarding. Many shared their desire for a fun activity that could keep them active and contribute to community.

- Skateboarding is for everyone, and the focus is on creating an inclusive and safe environment for beginners and returnees. "It's not just about keeping your body in shape. Many older people feel isolated, and the social context is important, says Fredrik to NLT.

During the session, experienced leaders with a long background in skateboarding were on hand to give advice and tips. Participants received individualized help to find their balance on the board and adapt the exercises to their abilities, while being encouraged to challenge themselves at their own pace. The atmosphere was positive and the enthusiasm infectious, reinforcing the association's vision of combining physical activity with fun and social interaction.

- "Research clearly shows that physical activity has a huge impact on health, especially when combined with social interaction," Fredrik, who also does his internship for Make a Move, explains to NLT.
